Just curious as to which references people use for their art/character/story ideas.
Mine are as follows:
The Samurai Film (alain Silver) The Ultimate Encyclopedia of Mythology (Arthur Cotterell and Rachel Storm) Ninja (stephen turnbull) Samurai the world of the Warrior (Stephen Turnbull) Sekigahahra 1600 (anthony Bryant) Samurai Warfare (Stephen Turnbull) Japanese castles (1540 - 1640) (Stephen Turnbull) Siege Weapons of the Far East 1 (Stephen Turnbull) Nagashino 1575 (Stephen Turnbull) Kawanakajima (1553-1564) Stephen Turnbull) samurai (1550 - 1600) Anthony Bryant Imperial chinese armies 1 (CJ Peers) Sengoku (Anthony Bryant) All the Legend of the Five Rings books The Samurai Sourcebook (Stephen Turnbull) The Samurai recreated in colour photographs (Mitsuo Kure and Ghislaine Kruit) The book of Five Rings (Miyamoto Musashi) The Samurai (Stephen Turnbull) Romance of the Three Kingdoms (luo Guanzhong) Outlaws of the Marsh (Luo Guanzhong) A History of Japan (1334 - 1615) (George Samson) The Art of War (Sun Tzu)
and
the Code of the Samurai (daidoji Yuzan)
amongst many others ha ha
What about the rest of you? Or does it all come from your own imaginations?

To be completely honest most of the things I do come completely from the ol mind, but I do draw from things I like. For example comics, videogames, movies. Other then that though I dont have any specific thing.
I do use references for poses sometimes.

I'll have to get my artistic references together to list. As for the character/art/story references, most just come from my head.....a real hodgepodge. Pose references are sometime inspired by martial arts magazines and what few comics I may have. I also do Google searches of historic figures for poses for the older, non-warrior characters. I'll get a list of my historic references and martial arts mags together shortly.

I would love to read some of those reference books! Nice collection. Thanks! The Samurai Sourcebook, as Jeff has said, is an excellent historic database. Any Turnbull book is a wealth of info. eek! And I thought I had a lot of books ha ha Well alot of the Turnbull stuff is, as you said before, is the same or very similar book to book. Many are those Osprey books, very good nevertheless. I also have artistic reference books for horses, birds, etc.

I've been reading a book on Mythology which covers the Far East. It's a Hermes House Encylopedia of Mythology. A great read!

I just picked up a new Turnbull book, Strongholds of the Samurai, Japanese Castles 250-1877. Great book, many good pics/illustrations of the feudal Japanese castles.
