It is sad that this movie was made a year before my birth and i am just now getting to see them. Yes when i grew up, i grew up in Kansas and they didnt get much out there movie wise, well not a great selection at all.
so i am going to get this on Netflix (thank god for them) i will give my review.
Blind fugitive Zatoichi (Shintaro Katsu) seeks respite in his favorite village, which he remembers as a peaceful retreat. His memories soon fade when he discovers the town is now lorded over by Boss Masagoro (Masakane Yonekura) and his mercenary bodyguard Yojimbo (Toshiro Mifune). It's blade against blade as the two master swordsmen face each other in a metal showdown that will determine the fate of the village and the winner of a golden prize.

The Zatoichi series are true classics. I haven't seen them in years but they are greats. This is one of the later ones, they (25 movies) began in 1962 and ended I believe in 1973 but there was a 1989 movie as well and a Japanese television series in the 1970's regard Zatoichi.
I never saw these on TV either, probably too violent or just not what many people in these parts would care for I guess. I'm from the Baltimore-Washington area and there were a good amount of Hong Kong Kung Fu movies on many stations as a kid. That was a major influence on my love of martial arts and even Far Eastern culture.

A true classic - I've got them all on DVD - another good one is when Zatoichi meets up with the One Armed Swordsman (a popular character from Chinese Kung FU movies) - kind of like a Godzilla vs King Kong style movie. If you're a fan of the yojimbo character then there's another movie with him in it - AMbush at Blood Pass.
