Never went to college so no I was in art in high school, but then again I was only in high school for 9th grade then I home schooled. I am 99% self taught. I taught myself anatomy and facial structures and expressions and all of that. Sorry if I sound arrogant, but it makes me happy I did it that way. Cause that way I developed my own style, techniques and general mannerisms on how I go about my work.

I've just learned from trial and error. I did take many art classes in school. I minored in art in college but that was more of a general art study. In hindsight I should have looking into a school like the Joe Kubert School in Dover, NJ which specializes in comic art. Oh well.

The limited college I took I didn't even take an art class but I was kinda leaning into it but saw that no money was involved in art really. I did take art for two years in high school and did very well in it and had such a cool teacher! My teacher use to play the radio in our class everyday which to me was so great.

What do you guys draw inspiration from? I could never get into the mood to draw when I was in school. I usually go threw my collection of either comic books or National Geographic. I study how the photographers set up a shot with mood, lighting and balance. NG is great to study backgrounds and odd foliage. also some great anime action pumps me up for dynamic scenes. When drawing some pumping music or beer help out to relax, sometimes too much-heh I also check out really really good artist galleries and immerse myself into their world...then go draw.

I never thought about National Geographic magazines. I have tons of these dating back to the 1960's and one as old as from 1923. I'll have to revisit them and see if they work for me.

I wanted to go to the Art institute in 1990 but my dad said no and wouldnt pay.. so i joined the Navy and went off for awhile. I wish i didnt stop drawing for 10 years. i paid for it. Art is like Martial arts, you have to practice everyday. I lacked as a warrior for a long time. grrr

I only have back to the 70s. You are lucky! My parents had a subscription from the early-1970's (when I was born) until the late-1980's. I picked up the others at various yardsales, flee markets, and such. I always love the old advertisments....especially the old car ones. I don't think anyone throws NG's away. Jeff, do you have any secrets or methods you use to break artistic lulls? I go through them from time to time. Most are the byproduct of being too much work at my place of employment.

Ha ha funny you should mention that - I'm really struggling with drawing at the moment. I sometimes just leave it a couple of days or maybe switch styles and work on my comic book or something like that.

Hey whatever works, at least your still keeping at it if you are doing your comic. You have any professional schooling Jeff?

Nope - I don't think you can really teach art - I feel you need to learn it yourself. I didn't like people at school telling me I was doing things wrong. Sure you can learn a little theory but art is what you want to make of it right?

Jeff, do you have a certain time within a day that your artistic vibe is stronger?
